What to Expect

Mardi Himal Base Camp Trekking, although a small trekking peaks of Nepal at the height of 5,587 m and 18, 325 feet high, but one of the best scenic trekking destinations on off the beaten trails.

Where adventure takes you at 4,500 m / 14, 763 feet high at the base of Mardi Himal, without much problem of catching high altitude sickness or AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), which is quite common on other higher areas of Himalaya.

On this wonderful Mardi Himal Base Camp Trekking, where altitude gains at a gradual pace, with time for trekkers to get accustomed to surrounding mountain terrains and as well getting acclimatize on daily scenic walks.

Mardi Himal created as a separate peak from the broken South West Lower flank and a ridge of towering Machhapuchare or Fish Tail peak, where Machhapuchare remains as a virgin and unclimbed mountain.

But interested adventurer can climb Mardi Himal which is situated at a mere distance from Machhapuchare Himal, the twin summit appears of a shape like a Fish Tail, an exciting and enjoyable adventure journey to Mardi Himal and its base camp which will be the highest point of the trek.

The specialty of Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek, it is an unknown destination for many trekkers and adventurer, the area was a Sheppard and local hunter’s temporary settlement in early days. 

This beautiful area and trail to the base of Mardi Himal was pioneered by the western explorer in the late 1960’s, searching for new routes that might link with famous Annapurna Sanctuary, and found this scenic and magnificent spot then named as ‘The Other Sanctuary’.

At present slowly gaining popularity where few lodges, known as Tea-House has been built along designated overnight stops, and all way to High Camp of Mardi Himal which is few hours ahead from its base camp. 

Mardi Himal base camp trek starts and ends at lovely Pokhara, a city blessed with the natural beauty of high Annapurna Himalaya with towering Machhapuchare Himal that reflects on its serene Phewa and Begnas Lakes.

Walk begins with a short drive from Pokhara to reach on the foot of Annapurna Himalaya mid-hills, where Dhampus, Potana, and Australian Camp / Thulo Kharka villages situated.

Start the trek with a climb to the top of a hill at Australian Camp or Thulo Kharka, a large green field in the middle of a lovely forest with excellent panorama of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu Himal includes views of Machhapuchare Himal.

Enjoying glorious scenery, walk leads through Potana and into the cool shade of alpine woods to reach at Deurali, another scenic spot for marvelous views of rolling green hills and snow-capped peaks.

From Deurali onward our route diverts from the main popular trail of Dhampus to Ghandruk villages and beyond, after Deurali adventure leads north towards high scenic ridges of Mardi and Machhapuchare Himal, the trail is narrow amidst dense forest of tall rhododendron, pines, oaks and fir trees.

Slowly and steady walks takes you further higher where tree lines drops for smaller bush of rhododendron and Himalayan shrubs, on reaching the final overnight stop at High Camp.

This will be the highest overnight spot of the journey at 3, 600 m /11,811 feet, a place with few simple lodge, having an extra day at High Camp for a scenic day hike to visit Mardi Himal base camp.

A strenuous climb for few hours as you reach a small flat field or a plateau close to rocky and ice face of Mardi and Machhapuchare Himal that towers high above the skyline.

Enjoy spectacular panorama of Annapurna Himalaya range with Machhapuchare Himal at close distance from the highest point of the adventure at Mardi Himal base camp.

After a glorious moment and achieving success on reaching our main highlights, then return back to High Camp for last overnight on the high ridges of Mardi Himal. Return journey continues taking a different alternative route with long descend to reach back into farm village at Sidang. 

Finally, our wonderful adventure to Mardi Himal Base Camp trekking completes with a short drive to picturesque Pokhara by its beautiful Phewa Lake, before heading back to hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu. 

 

Best time for Mardi Himal Base Camp Trekking:

The best time for this wonderful adventure to Mardi Himal is in spring and autumn seasons, spring from March to May when wild-flowers are in seasonal bloom with other species of beautiful flowers. 

Makes the trek more enjoyable and interesting with the backdrop of clear mountain views.

Next good months from September to November during autumn / fall season, when days are at its best with super clear blue sky for a magnificent panorama of snow-capped peaks. But days are short with sunlight hours can be much cold in the morning and evening time, with bright starry night sky.

Day 2Full day sightseeing tour in Kathmandu at places of interest.

Morning after breakfast join in for sightseeing tour around places of great cultural and historical interest where most old monuments listed in world heritage sites.

Tour takes you in the main area of Kathmandu city visit old Durbar Square (palace courtyard), and towards oldest Buddhist Stupa of Swayambhunath, and at the largest stupa of Bouddhanath includes tour of Pashupatinath Temple.

After an interesting and enjoyable day back to the hotel with time for preparation for the trek and drive to Pokhara.

Day 3Drive (or fly) to Pokhara 860 m - 06 hours journey (30 mins by air)

Enjoy early breakfast and then enjoy the overland journey to reach around Nepal at beautiful Pokhara, a renowned tourist city where most treks to Annapurna and Western Himalaya starts and ends.

Types of transport depending upon the size of the group in private cars, coach, or on the tourist bus to reach scenic Pokhara.

An interesting drive of 5 to 6 hours on 220 k.m distance, a great opportunity to observe Nepalese farm villages and towns as ride reach Pokhara transfer to respective hotels by the calm Phewa Lake. Most good hotels are located by the Lakeside offer super views of Annapurna and Machhapuchare Himal the famous Fish Tail peak.

(By air to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu of 30 minutes scenic flight)

Day 4Drive from Pokhara to Kande 1,700 m trek to Deurali 2,100 m- 05 hrs

At lovely Pokhara with a pleasant overnight stop, morning short drive of a few hours takes you past Pokhara valley facing views of Annapurna, Manaslu, and Machhapuchare Fish Tail peaks.

After few hours reach Kande village, from here trek starts with a climb into cool forest and past farm terraces, as the walk takes you on a nice and beautiful open field within a large meadow, called Australian Camp or Thulo Kharka.

Actually a summer grazing pasture ground for local villagers cattle, a great spot for a stunning panorama of Mt. Annapurna, Manaslu, with Machhapuchare Himal the Fish-Tail peak.

From here enjoying glorious views walk downhill and then up through the cool forest to reach at Deurali for overnight stop, a nice and scenic hilltop offers views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himalaya range.

Day 5Trek to Jungle Camp 2, 520 m - 05 hrs.

Morning enjoy magnificent views of Annapurna Himalaya mountain range with a giant peak of Dhaulagiri, from here our route diverts heading into hidden corners of Annapurna Himalaya.

Walk into lovely forest lined with rhododendron, oaks, pine, and fir trees, with a slow steep climb to reach at Jungle Camp also known as Kokar, situated amidst forest surroundings of tall rhododendron and pine trees.

Day 6Trek to Forest camp to Low Camp 2,970 m - 04 hrs.

 From Jungle camp today’s walk will be shorter than other previous days, however, the climb continues to reach a summer pasture for an overnight stop at Low Camp. 

A scenic spot in the middle of dense tree lines, with few smaller huts that serve as Tea-House and lodges, this lovely place offers grand views of surrounding landscapes with snow-capped mountains.

Day 7Trek to High Camp 3,600 m /11,811 feet-05 hrs

Today’s walk will be interesting to reach on the highest overnight stop at High Camp, actually not much of walking distance due to an increase in altitude makes the going much slower.

It is very important on high altitude adventure to take things slowly at a leisure pace with many shortstops to catch one breath, walk follows with a great vista of beautiful surroundings of rolling green hills and snow-clad peaks.

As adventure progress into serene surroundings then reaching our destination at High Camp, where you can feel much cooler being closer towards snow-capped mountain range.

High Camp a remote and isolated spot with few simple lodge for overnight stay with basic facilities, but one can enjoy superb views of Annapurna Himalaya.

Day 8At High Camp hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp 4, 500 m / 14, 763 feet

At High Camp for an overnight stop, from here day hike with pack lunch to reach our main destination of the adventure at Mardi Himal Base Camp as well the highest point of our trek.

After hearty breakfast start hiking to the base of Mardi Himal, following a faint trail path that runs along a high ridgeline with fantastic views of surrounding near mountain range of Annapurna Himalaya, with Mardi Himal and Machhapuchare Himal the famous Fish Tail.

Slowly few hours of steady walks reach you at our final destination at Mardi Himal base camp right beneath of Mardi Himal peak, and close to the towering south face of majestic Machhapuchare Himal at near distance.

Enjoy marvelous scenery of beautiful landscapes and snow-mountains all the way to its northeast and far western horizon. Return journey with slow descend to High Camp for last overnight stop on the high hills of Mardi and Annapurna Himalaya.

Day 9Trek to Siding 1,700 m- 07 hrs

From High Camp, starting early morning to cover one of the longest distance walk of the adventure, but much easier on the long downhill slope to reach back into dense woods.

As the walk continues with few short stops along the way with a final drop to reach a low warm valley and farm village at Sidang for last overnight halt on rural areas of Mid-West Nepal Himalaya.

Day 10Drive to Pokhara-04 hrs.

Last day, short leisure walk to board in a vehicle for short hour drives to reach beautiful Pokhara, after a most enjoyable and scenic time on the high hills of Mardi and Annapurna Himalaya.

Day 11Drive / Fly to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

After overnight at beautiful Pokhara by its serene lake along with fantastic views of Annapurna Himalaya, enjoy early breakfast and depart from the hotel for the exciting overland journey on interesting highway to reach back at Kathmandu.

On checking into your hotel rooms, with time in the afternoon for individual activities and shopping.Evening enjoy last day farewell group dinner in a nice Nepalese restaurants with Nepalese folk dance programs to entertain, while you enjoy last dinner in Nepal.
